The Wild Swans Part 2
Debate Writing Proposal about Chapter 2 of the Wild Swans:
Debate Topic:
In Chapter 2, the wicked queen becomes jealous of Eliza’s beauty and uses magic to harm her. When her first spell fails, she darkens Eliza’s skin with walnut juice, tangles her hair, and covers her with disgusting ointment. Eliza’s appearance changes so much that the king does not recognize her and sends her away.
Because the king believes the queen instead of trusting his own daughter:
• Eliza is driven from the palace
• She must wander alone
• She faces fear and hardship
• She begins her long journey to find her brothers.
This leads to the debate question:
Should the king have recognized that Eliza was still his daughter, even after the queen changed her appearance?”
After watching both sides of the debate in the video:
What is your opinion? Should the king have recognized that Eliza was still his daughter, even after the queen changed her appearance?
Write your opinion, explain your reasons, and give some examples from the story to support your answer.
Suggested Framework for the Answer:
• Topic Sentence: State your opinion clearly.
• Supporting Argument 1: Provide a reason supporting your opinion.
• Supporting Argument 2: Offer another reason or example.
• Conclusion: Summarize your opinion.
